I reported in the April 9, 2010 Typblography post that the “Hanyo-Denshi” (汎用電子) IVD Collection was submitted for registration, as PRI 167 (Public Review Issue #167). I am pleased to announce to readers of this blog that the “Hanyo-Denshi” IVD Collection was registered on November 14, 2010, and includes 4,195 IVSes. This represents a great achievement, specifically that it represents the second IVD collection to be successfully registered. The first, of course, was the “Adobe-Japan1” IVD Collection on December 14, 2007.

While I believe that there would have been benefits to sharing IVSes with the “Adobe-Japan1” IVD Collection, because approximately 60% of the “Hanyo-Denshi” IVSes correspond to “Adobe-Japan1” IVSes, in that the IVS pairs represent identical glyphs, it is more important to respect the decision of the “Hanyo-Denshi” IVD Collection registrant to keep them separate.

Still, for the benefit of present and future customers, it is prudent that we build a correspondence table between “Adobe-Japan1” and “Hanyo-Denshi” IVSes. I started this important task on November 21, 2010, by building a preliminary “Hanyo-Denshi” and “Adobe-Japan1” correspondence table that covers 2,550 of the “Hanyo-Denshi” IVD Collection’s 4,195 IVSes, which is over 60%, and which I intend to refine in the coming weeks ahead. (Feedback on the preliminary correspondence table is, of course, welcome and encouraged.) One benefit of such a correspondence table is that it allows for fonts to be developed that support both IVD collections, either completely or subsets thereof. Another benefit is that it enables better interoperability between the IVD collections, such as for document conversion tasks. There are many more uses.

In closing, let us congratulate those involved with preparing and submitting the “Hanyo-Denshi” IVD Collection.
