I am pleased to announce that the Adobe-KR-9 character collection, which went through four drafts, is now available as a Beta release that includes all of the expected collateral pieces, to include two fully-functional OpenType fonts with all of its glyphs. The Adobe-KR-9 project includes the specification proper, along with most of the collateral pieces. The two OpenType fonts are available for convenient download on the latest release page.
The CMap resources are also available in the CMap Resources project, and an updated UTF-32.pdf file that includes a Unicode-based glyph synopsis for the Adobe-KR-9 character collection is available on the latest release page.
It’s hard to believe that it has been nearly 20 years since we added a Supplement to our Korean glyph set, the Adobe-Korea1-2 character collection:
We simply added, as Supplement 2, less than 200 pre-rotated glyphs that are referenced by the 'vrt2' (Vertical Alternates and Rotation) GSUB feature that is now effectively deprecated in favor of compliance with UAX #50 (Unicode Vertical Text Layout) for which I am the co-editor starting from Unicode Version 11.0.
It has also been over 20 years since we issued a new public CJK glyph set, with our last one probably being Adobe-Japan2-0, which was deprecated when we released the Adobe-Japan1-6 character collection in 2004.
Compared to the Fourth Draft, the following are the changes that were made in this Beta release:
- The glyphs for U+BA90 몐, U+CADC 쫜, and U+D3D4 폔 were moved from Supplement 1 to Supplement 0.
- The glyphs for U+2003 EM SPACE, U+2004 THREE-PER-EM SPACE, U+2005 FOUR-PER-EM SPACE, U+2006 SIX-PER-EM SPACE, U+2007 FIGURE SPACE, U+2009 THIN SPACE, U+200A HAIR SPACE, U+FB00 ff LATIN SMALL LIGATURE FF, U+FB01 fi LATIN SMALL LIGATURE FI, U+FB02 fl LATIN SMALL LIGATURE FL, U+FB03 ffi LATIN SMALL LIGATURE FFI, and U+FB04 ffl LATIN SMALL LIGATURE FFL were added to Supplement 0.
- The glyph for U+FF5E ～ FULLWIDTH TILDE was removed from Supplement 4.
- The glyph for U+301C 〜 WAVE DASH, along with its vertical form, were added to Supplement 4.
- U+2003 and U+301C no longer map to the glyphs for U+3000 and U+FF5E, respectively.
- U+FF5E now maps to the glyph for U+301C.
- The glyph for U+27CEF 𧳯 was added to Supplement 8.
- The glyphs for U+00AB « LEFT-POINTING DOUBLE ANGLE QUOTATION MARK, U+00AC ¬ NOT SIGN, and U+00BB » RIGHT-POINTING DOUBLE ANGLE QUOTATION MARK were moved from Supplement 9 to Supplement 5.
- The vertical forms of U+3095 ゕ HIRAGANA LETTER SMALL KA and U+3096 ゖ HIRAGANA LETTER SMALL KE were added to Supplement 9.
Lastly, Supplement 6 of Adobe-KR-9 includes 161 archaic hangul syllables, 74 of which are not included among the 500 high-frequency ones in the Source Han / Noto CJK fonts, and the live text below that uses Source Han Sans is actually a mixture of 87 pre-composed and 74 combining archaic hangul syllables:
